Higher education and promotional merchandise

We were chatting the other day about the steep rise in fees for most, if not all, universities across England.

As well as the usual concerns about affordability, student debt, would it put talented young people off going to university, etc., it struck me that the more 'commercial' universities become, then the greater the financial element of a prospective student's decision about where to go to university, and thus the more universities will need to market an image.

In other words, they will have to think more like companies in terms of promoting a brand. Now, to some extent, they have already made moves in this direction over the last 10-15 years, but it does seem likely to gather further momentum now.
